Obstetrics Q&A

What is obstetrics?

Obstetrics is a medical specialty that provides surgical treatment for people with female reproductive organs during pregnancy and childbirth.

At Top Doc OB/GYN, the obstetricians specialize in both traditional and minimally invasive surgical techniques. They even offer Da Vinci robotic surgery, allowing for smaller incisions, reduced risk of complications, and quicker recovery times.

Who can benefit from obstetrics?

Anyone who is pregnant or waiting to get pregnant can benefit from obstetrics. You should make an appointment at Top Doc OB/GYN as soon as you get a positive pregnancy test or within eight weeks of your last menstrual period. After the first visit, you return to the office once a month until birth.

Are obstetrics and high risk obstetrics the same thing?

Top Doc OB/GYN offers both traditional obstetrics and high risk obstetrics. You might benefit from high risk obstetrics if you’re pregnant and you:

  • Are carrying multiple babies
  • Have a chronic medical condition
  • Are 35 or older
  • Have miscarried in the past
  • Smoke or drink during pregnancy

Your provider can monitor your health throughout the course of your pregnancy, reducing the risk of potentially serious issues.

What types of procedures does obstetrics provide?

Aside from traditional pregnancy and prenatal care, obstetrics provides surgery. The providers at Top Doc OB/GYN regularly perform:

  • Cervical cerclage (to prevent cervical weakness)
  • Dilation and curettage (removal of the uterus lining)
  • Cesarean delivery (C-section)
  • Vaginal delivery
  • Circumcision
  • Forceps and vacuum deliveries
  • Ultrasound
  • Genetic testing

Obstetricians also perform an episiotomy, a cut at the opening of the vagina that assists in delivery.

Will I still need obstetrics after giving birth?

It’s important to continue seeing your obstetrician even after giving birth. Postnatal checkups can ensure your vaccinations are up-to-date and monitor any medical concerns like postpartum depression or high blood pressure. Your obstetrician can recommend birth control options, like oral contraceptives or an intrauterine device (IUD) if you're done having children.

What should I bring to an obstetrics appointment?

To ensure your obstetrics appointment goes smoothly, bring the following documents:

  • Your health insurance card
  • Results from any recent or relevant medical tests
  • List of the prescription medications and vitamins you take
  • Any questions or concerns you have

If you’ve recently seen a medical specialist or another doctor, make sure to bring their contact information as well.
